Forced marriage
«Marriage shall be entered into only with the free and full consent of the intending spouses.»
(Art. 16 (2) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights)
Forced marriages exist throughout the world - and they are also found in Switzerland. Young women and men, even minors, are married against their will, must bear children and are forced to stay in their marriage. Forced marriages not only violate national law, but also the fundamental human rights of those involved, namely the right of self-determination, freedom, physical and psychological integrity and education. This affects women and men with different cultural and religious backgrounds. Not every arranged marriage is a forced marriage.
