What is sexism?
'Sexism' means, on the one hand, any form of violence, exploitation and discrimination due to gender and, on the other hand, requirements regarding identity and behaviour made of a person or group of people due to their gender, gender identity or sexual orientation.
Examples:
- A hidden form of sexism is the chronic under-representation of women as experts in the media.
- Men as heterosexual breadwinners in the family. The role stereotype prevents the examination of alternative role models (e.g. as a father and house husband).
- Women in a lascivious position with half-opened mouths are omnipresent in advertising. Since this suggests that the woman is sexually available, she is degraded to a mere object.
Patriarchal societies (and all societies are still patriarchal) are oriented toward the two gender categories, female and male. «Sexism» is a broad field, and not only women are affected by it, because men are also catalogued and labelled simply on the basis of their biological gender. These classifications of types can be termed sexist.
Sexism appears everywhere in our daily lives. But don't a person's interests, skills and talents count for much more?
