Female Genital Mutilation is the partial or total removal of or other injury to the external female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
Throughout the world, the term «Female Genital Mutilation [FGM]» is used. The term «mutilation» makes it clear that this is a form of violence, bodily harm and the abuse of human rights. It is a medical term that expresses what is done to the female genitalia. The term mutilation makes it clear that this is about the removal/destruction of healthy tissue and that this intervention is irreversible.
